·        Bloom Time: June to September

·        Bloom: upright spikes of densely-packed, deep-violet-blue tubular flowers on square stems above foliage mound; repeat blooming

·        Light: full sun

·        Soil: average, well-drained; prefers moist gravelly or sandy soils

·        Moisture: medium to dry; water sparingly in prolonged dry spells; somewhat drought tolerant once established

·        Use: perennial borders; cottage, butterfly, pollinator or wild gardens; edging; textural interest; cut flower

·        Care: remove spent blooms to help extend bloom time; cut back to basal foliage if foliage flops or deteriorates as the summer progresses ; cutting back promotes new flush of flowering; divide clumps every 3 to 4 years in early spring before new growth appears

·        Concerns: no serious insect problems; some susceptibility to powdery mildew, leaf spot and rust

·        Native to: hybrid cultivar of species native to a wide area of central Europe and western Asia

·        Notes: sterile hybrid; erect, compact, well-branched salvia with excellent winter hardiness and heat tolerance; plants form bushy basal mound of velvety, tongue-shaped, gray-green leaves (to 4 inches long); leaves are pungently aromatic when bruised; flowers attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds; deer resistant; salt tolerant
