·        Bloom: cluster of large (to 2 inch) nodding, maroon-red flowers hidden under leaves, emerging from leaf crotch; flowers may give rise to clusters of grape-sized spherical green fruits (mayapples)

·        Light: part to full shade

·        Soil: rich, moist acidic, humusy, well-drained

·        Moisture: medium; consistent and even (may go dormant in summer if soils dry)

·        Use: borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and open woodland areas

·        Care: water, if needed; protect from spring frosts

·        Concerns: no serious disease or insect problems; susceptible to root rot in poorly-drained soils

·        Native to: hybrid of a Chinese species

·        Notes: fuzzy single red stem crowned with two large (to 18 inches), lobed, umbrella-shaped leaves; leaves emerge chartreuse with purple-brown spotting in spring, change to dark green with lighter spots in summer; spreads by rhizomes over time; more sun-tolerant than other Pulmonarias, particularly in cool summer regions
