·        Bloom: loose terminal spikes of gentian-blue or purple trumpet-shaped flowers (to 1 inch each)

·        Soil: fertile, medium moisture, well-drained

·        Moisture: medium

·        Use: borders, cottage gardens, native plant areas; best in massed or small groupings; important mid-summer nectar source for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies

·        Care: fertilize regularly; protect from strong winds; taller plants may require support; remove spent flower spikes to encourage additional bloom

·        Concerns: dislikes high humidity; susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spots, and crown rot; watch for slugs and snails

·        Native to: Eastern North America; a Wisconsin native plant

·        Notes: 3-5 lobed deep green leaves; fibrous roots; important mid-summer nectar source for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies; deer and rabbit resistant; all parts of this plant are poisonous
