·        Light: filtered sun,  part shade to full shade; tolerates heavy shade

·        Soil: fertile, humusy, well-drained

·        Moisture: keep soil evenly moist; tolerates some dryness once established

·        Use: woodland or shade gardens; underplanting trees and shrubs;  shaded foundation plantings

·        Care: remove faded fronds regularly; divide plants when crowded

·        Concerns: no serious insect or disease problems

·        Native to: species native to India and China

·        Notes: semi-evergreen fern; compact clump of lance-shaped fronds from an upright rhizome; noted for its dramatic spring foliage color; shoots emerge golden-orange,  fade to golden yellow, eventually turning bright green in summer; deer and rabbit resistant
