·        Bloom Time: early spring

·        Bloom: vase-shaped, velvety, chocolate-purple flowers (fused sepals without petals) 2 inches wide under foliage at soil level

·        Light: bright shade to deep shade; avoid direct sunlight

·        Soil: average to slightly-acidic, humus-rich, moist, and well-drained

·        Moisture: low, consistent; drought tolerant once established

·        Use: attractive perennial groundcover for shady areas; woodland gardens; underplanting  roses and shrubs

·        Care: low maintenance; protect from slugs by clearing nearby areas of plant debris and mulch; if necessary, use slug removal interventions; prevent winter burn by sheltering from wind and sun; if needed  for rejuvenation, shear and remove the previous year's foliage

·        Concerns: generally resistant to pests and diseases, but watch for slugs and snails; prone to leaf burn from direct sunlight

·        Native to: China

·        Notes: thick mat of semi-evergreen foliage; large, dark green heart-shaped leaves (7 inches long and 3 inches wide) with prominent silver mottling; spreads moderately by underground rhizomes; slower-growing than Asarum wild gingers;  heat and humidity tolerant; deer resistant
