·        Bloom: spikes of dark-purple flowers with burgundy calyces above foliage

·        Soil: prefers sandy or gravelly soils, but tolerates most well-drained soil types

·        Moisture: average; allow soil to dry between waterings; drought tolerant once established

·        Use: mass planting, border edging, mixed perennial gardens, container planting, cut flower; flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbird

·        Care: low maintenance; take care not to damage crown when foliage dies back in winter, and clean up in early spring

·        Concerns: no serious disease or insect problems

·        Native to: species native to a wide area of central Europe and western Asia

·        Notes: herbaceous perennial with upright spreading habit; fragrant, narrow green leaves on burgundy stems; somewhat tolerant of urban pollution; rabbit and deer resistant
